After GURPS 4E Fantasy, I wasn't expecting GURPS 4E Space to be anything like GURPS 3E Space.

Having just flipped through it, I was expecting 4E Space to be more like 4E Fantasy. Genre info + samples of useful bits. Fantasy had a fair number of vehicles, some weapons, sample racial templates, meta-traits, spells, etc.

And yet totally different than GURPS 3E Fantasy.

Kromm explained why Space is the way it is: because they chose the best from three option. However I feel a fourth, much better option was missed. I've advocated this one since long time ago.
Publish GURPS Space and a Web-Enhancement at the same time. This free document contains a handful of pages about tech gear and starships, lifted directly from the drafts of Ultra-Tech and VDS. The benefits of this approach:
  • Non-gearheads happy. They have a complete product.
  • Gearheads happier than now. They have something to work on.
  • Once Ultra-Tech and VDS are ready, you can update the document. No incompatibilities.
  • No repetitions through different printed books. No space wasted.
  • Keeps the line consistent and separated. No exceptions.
  • Web-Enhancement teases customers to buy Ultra-Tech and VDS or Vehicles.
The point is to publish the book and the web-enhancement at the same time. That should have been the top priority, and would have avoided a lot of complains. I'm happy to understand that SJG has something similar in the works -- Paul's words. Better late than never, and hope SJG learns from this. :)
