One thing he might want to consider is that the sort of ammo we're talking about is going to weigh about double what .45 Colt or .44-40 ammo would, and thus he'll only get 10-11 rounds to the pound, rather than 20-23 to the pound. Re-using the cases and handloading will save a bit of weight, but it'll be proportionally about the same, so the weight penalty for the more powerful gun will be the same either way - half the ammo.
