If I were GMing, and a player somehow got a fire elemental to be able to carry a darkness item, I'd rule that it would just dim it and drastically reduce the range of its light.

If I were GMing and wanted a fire elemental to be hidden in darkness, I'd just do it. Players don't get to demand explanations from the GM (although the GM will still sometimes give them).
