Yeah, Anaraxes, I think you're totally right that this rule came with the territory at the time. So TFT was likely to include it even if it wasn't necessary for balance the way it may have been with D&D. Also, there's the default assumption that adventurers will find scads of gold and need stuff to spend it on.
Shadekeep, I do like the resource management issue when a no-iron wizard finds themselves with a broken weapon. That's a good point. And so is using other wizard's silver stuff as treasure, except that locks me into providing this auto treasure dump any time they fight another wizard. I can see how both aspects would work really well in some campaigns though.
Similarly, I really like Skarg's point that characters can try to spot the npc wizards based on visible iron. Would they use magic to make their silver look like iron even? I definitely like the idea of there being at least some potential clues to "spot the wizard," but I probably don't want it to be too easy.
