"They eat anything metal" is flavor text. "Discard your Hand Items" is the rule. Yes, this includes Cheated Items. It does not include the Laser Gun if you've previously equipped it as a Vehicle Enhancer, but you can't retroactively decide it's an enhancer once you see the Curse.
