That is how we've always played it too. But this is an interesting one.

ITL p116: "Missile weapons never get a bonus for the target’s facing."
But no mention of thrown weapons. The closest thing I can find is p 114 which says thrown attacks are identical to regular attacks except for range penalty.
The wording is the same in Advanced Melee, and OG Melee 5th edition.

And as far as "realism" goes, yes it is definitely easier to hit someone with an egg or dodge ball when they aren't looking at you. So the facing bonus for thrown weapons seems OK in that sense too.

I agree with Tom, facing bonus does works oddly for rolling to miss allies. Maybe just ignore facing when rolling to miss, friend or foe.
