You can certainly decide that's something that matters in your campaign, and I might tend to agree, for balance/preference rather than logic reasons.
(especially since I have experienced in great detail many times how magic items can unbalance a campaign and alter how it goes in ways I don't personally tend to prefer) But as far as what the rules say, I don't actually remember, but doesn't it just call for ST and time spent, not necessarily for the apprentices to need to all be wizards? |

Since the Apprentice job does not require Literacy then I could see a variant where apprentices require Aid and either being a wizard or knowing Sorcerers' Tongue. The logic being that they're listening along in the enchantment for the proper place to cast their Aid spell. Wizards would have a decade's training in spellcasting procedures and the non-wizards are figuring this out as they listen to this spell.

The apprentice job isn't necessarily the practical requirements for assisting with an enchantment.
Now I'm looking at the book (ITL 154-5), it looks to me like an apprentice helping with an enchantment just needs to know Aid and to spend time fetching and carrying and doing tasks. Doesn't say they need to be a wizard. As for knowing when to cast Aid... seems to me the enchanter could tell them, or gesture, and/or that there's no reason it would be beyond the understanding of a non-wizard, unless, of course, the GM says so, which indeed they might if they don't want non-wizard enchantment assistants to be a thing. |
