I never owned the Melee or Wizard games back in the day and just worked from the three advanced books that made up the TFT system. I never felt any need for any rules in the basic games and don't see why that should be any different now.

Of course the base games have the maps and counters for the game and are a simpler introduction to the system, but you don't actually need them. You can use the advanced rules with your own maps and counters, or no physical components at all if you wish.

Yes, the standard scale for the new Melee and Wizard (and Death Test) is 25 mm markers and 37.5 mm hexes. The pocket box game has the older smaller scale, but it is the exception. Once you play with the new scale markers you will not miss the old scale; it is a revelation to have nice big maps on the table and be moving around nice big markers.

I'm getting in quite a bit of real play with the new edition, and I'd say the most important new thing is the quality and usefulness at the table of the 'toys' (markers, hex tiles, mats, etc.). The improvements in this department remind you this is a game, and they make that game more fun. This is the best reason to get hard copies of the core materials. I'm also making a LOT of use of the pads, which I am constantly doodling on to build up my caste of NPCs. I wish they were on thicker paper and had some kind of organized spaces on their backs, but thats a dream for another day...

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but I could not find a list of adjDX modifiers in In The Labyrinth softcover of the Legacy Edition.

It appears you need the GMs Screen or Wizard.

I’m stoked about the scale differences, actually. I’m grabbing the Legacy box for general use, and the Melee & Wizard Pocket Box for my son. I’m going to give it to him to take to camp this summer, assuming he likes the regular game when we play it at home. I’m thinking of the Pocket Box sort of like the “travel size” version of the game.

Good to hear! That was exactly our goal with the game components. TFT's engine lends itself to tactical dungeon encounters, and we wanted to provide the tools to make that as easy on players as possible.

Decks of Destiny continues our journey down that particular choice . . .

It often occurred to me, over the decades, that it wouldnt kill TFT to have bigger counters .. it really was hard to see what was going on, on a board 1 meter long with 20+ lil guys stabbing each other! (Im gettin on, my eyes are old and bent)

Im pretty happy this has happened in a standardised way, all TFT players on the same page for bigger counters :) (tho Im yet to atually fondle any in 25mm, seen em on Youtube only) .. next month, gettin me some Wizard and Melee .. WhooHoo!

EDIT waytta minit .. april 17 .. thats frikkin TODAY :) lol betta hie me down to the local shoppe tommorra then, twist their elbow to order stuff (unless its massively cheaper online .. probably it is eh)

EDIT 2 .. opps Wizard and Melee are next month Doh! .. gee whiz .. do I want everything in the Legacy Edition? hmmmmm .. I do already have DT 1+2, and 2 copies of original Tollenkars Lair ..

To argue a bit against myself, I am happy that I have the old edition materials, and very much like the pocket box; it is perfectly suited to a quick game over lunch or having a game with you when you travel. And the box is big enough to fit a large subset of my old chits and maps, along with those that came with it. So, that is all great. But when I sit down for a proper game I think the expanded scale is perfect. It enhances the experience much more than I was expecting.
