I agree there needs to be a clarification. Just re-read both the text on 161 and 162 to put it in context. When I read it what it says to me is that for purposes of my effective ST, it cannot be raised beyond 5 but that my ST can be raised beyond that for casting a spell. In other words, my apprentice could give me 10 ST in an aid spell and before I can cast the spell, I'm attacked by a weak orc. So I hit him barehands regular combat and my damage is based on my ST of 10 plus 5 more for the aid spell. The other 5 doesn't count. At least that's the only thing that makes sense because I agree with both TippetsTX and Skarg.
