First look up the concept of Check Kiting if you haven't heard about it.

The situation is that the ST 10 wizard has taken 20 total hits and has no healing. He is so dead.... except that he isn't. Because while taking these hits he cast Aid ST on himself from his staff mana and he continues to kite along the added ST by recasting it onto himself in further Aid spells.
