Curses

I have read frequently ased Qs but did not found a rule can I use Curses from my hand while I in combat and I'm about to lose and bad stuff is death or something which makes me get rid of cards from my hand, can I use Curses before I need to discard them or give as charity when I die from mons (bad stuff), asking cause it says curses can be played at any time but friends did not allow me to use them when I'm in combat...
