Curse: thrown into the arena

This curse says in your next fight you dont get any combat bonus from items other then hand items, can opponent play it on me when I open kick a door and it was a strong monster, he did not play it before I kicked a door? I mean almost everyone said its not applying for that strong monster it applies for my next combat?
