Bullwhip question

Card says that when committed to a fight (I'm guessing as a defense) the weapon becomes a 2 gold, 2 damage, 2 heart monster.

What's the point of it becoming a monster? It's already dealing 2 damage with 2 defense.

Monstrous means you can hire it as a monster if you haven't already put it into play as Loot. The wording is perhaps a bit unclear.
