Actually,
Dragon Warriors didn't do that...you may be thinking of another game. In
Dragon Warriors each weapon had fixed damage, and a die type to roll against armor type. For example, a sword did 4 points damage and rolled a d8 to "bypass armor", with armor ranging from 1 for leather up to 5 for plate. Rather odd but it worked well enough.
