Trolls are not the primary bad guy. The players won't likely face them unless they become very strong. There's a whole world of fantasy tropes around to adventure with. The trolls are not the center of the campaign, and shouldn't have much bearing at all on the players until much later.

So why do anything with them now?

Why have a point cost for them? That's an alarm bell for me that this is an exercise in GURPS rules rather than actual games.
