A fun topic! On a related point, Arms Law also got its start as a replacement combat system for other games (meaning D&D). It is a telling comment on how game making and publishing worked back then that none of them really explain how this is supposed to work. At this point we were just a couple of years past the point where D&D couldn't decide which of two totally different core combat systems it wanted you to use, neither of which were explained competently! I'll be interested to see what memories people dredge up. I personally never tried to use Melee as the combat engine for another game. Instead, we just assumed our way to using melee as its own quasi-roleplaying game for the couple of years it took for ITL to come out.
