Sacrificing the original hireling

The original Hireling card allows an automatic escape from any monster (1 monster), but the general hireling rules say that sacrificing a hireling gets you an automatic escape from any fight (any number of monsters).

Is this a case of card text trumps the rulebook, or should you apply the newer rules to the original hireling as well?
