I had been doing some stuff in Mythic Egypt where the PCs were exploring the pyramid of Makrut, an ancient sorcerer pharaoh who died ages past. He held huge sums of treasure and built a dungeon inside the pyramid conveniently for the PCs to delve into. There were other factions complicating the adventure, other treasure hunters and there were demons and evil jinn setting up shop inside the dungeon as well. Also there was a Salafi/Wahabi style group that wanted to stop people from exploring the pyramid and they were bent on destroying any artifact that came from it. They rejected all secular magic as Infernal and they used protection amulets against magic spells. It worked like this; an amulet might have say 10 power units and it could be used to resist a spell or magical power. For example, a wizard casts charm on the person with the amulet. The person with the amulet makes his resistance roll against will and if he suceeds then he resists the spell. If he fails then he can use his power units to overcome the spell. Say he missed the resistance roll by 3 then he can choose to use 3 power units to succeed and not be charmed. The power units on the amulet are then reduced to 7 (10 - 3=7). Eventually the amulet loses its power and then is no longer helpful.
