New Scenario: Sidewinder

You can find this new Ogre scenario at the link above. Please play it and comment - on game balance, clarity of instructions, or whatever else you think of - here in this thread.

OK, several questions off the bat:

1) Which way do you turn the map? Do you rotate it clockwise so that North becomes East, or counter-clockwise so North becomes West?

2) When you say the 'row' of hexes beginning in 08, are you talking about 'xx08' (which implies rotating clockwise), or do you mean something else? If the former, I recomment wording it as permitting the defense to set up in xx08-xx01 or something like that.

3) Looking at the map, those laser turrets aren't going to be able to fire at much, if anything. Also, you should specify what the laser rules are for this scenario beyond "they're D1" since Ogre Sixth Edition users may not have those rules...

4) The only force difference between laser turrets and laser towers is 6 INF - that seems awful small a differential given that the tower can hit the Ogre on turn 1, and the turrets probably can't hit it until its within 5-6 hexes at most...

Beyond that, it looks like an interesting scenario.

Why do you need to even turn the map on the side? Can't you just say "Ogre enters from the left (or top, or whatever) side of the map"?

Obviously that initial comment needs to be deleted. Steve was just referencing that the scenario works from East to West, rather than South to North. N, E, W, S are unchanged on the map as described within the scenario, even if North is no longer at the "top" of the map, should you chose to actually rotate the map.

With the map rotated, column 08xx is now row 08xx. But again, this needs clarification. Basically, the PE force needs to set up on the western half of the map.

For the basic scenario, they're essentially CPs with some 'point-defense' capability. The Laser Tower variant adds some teeth to them.

This is why we want you play-testing it. This differential may need tweaking.

One more thought: If this will be used by players who will only have the new Ogre 6E rules, you need to (briefly) explain the rules for lasers. Something like:

Quote:
3.2 Lasers. In this scenario, lasers have an attack strength of 2 and can reach anywhere on the map, except a laser is blocked by any crater or ridge hexside. Use a straightedge to establish whether there is a clear line-of-sight between the laser and its target.

3.2.1 Lasers and Ogre Missiles. A laser can attempt to intercept each Ogre missile on the turn it is fired. To do so, the laser must roll a 10 or above on two dice. A laser that shoots at an opponent's missile(s) may not attack during its next fire phase.
This way, players can easily adopt lasers to their 6E games.

These scenarios are part of the 8 promised by Steve to backers of the Kickstarter campaign, who presumably have ODE and the laser rules.

That being said, I do appreciate it that people are keeping Ogre Sixth Ed. (future-) owners in mind; it will help make sure that they get the full benefit of these scenarios as well! Please keep pointing out these issues.

GEV Escort rule 1.02 says that scenario will be published in the 6E box, so I thought the others in this series might be published there as well.

IIRC, 6 Ed is already at print, so it would be hard for these new ones to be published with it.

The defenders set up on the west side of the map, so the Ogre enters right in their faces. Cool. But then the word "behind" in "on or behind the row of hexes beginning in 08" is a problem because it makes the 08xx hex column (hex row, or what you will) sound like the Forward Edge Our Troops. That's how I'd have interpreted it, especially by analogy with the original Basic and Advanced scenarios.

Better to use "on or west of the row of hexes beginning in 08."
