If you understand the principals of a gauss weapon then you understand why it's treated as APEP and other questions.
They aren't slivers, per se. The ammo is more like nails which are called "Needles". Anything you can do to a nail you can do to a gauss round. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TWeJsaCiGQ0 Videos like these can give you an idea of what the ammo looks like. And although these guns don't have the power of the ones in UT, they work on the very same technology idea.
