Our street-level fixers, dala dala operators and scavanged trash-tech punks with hearts of gold, living in a cyberpunk-ish version of a 2100 free city of Dar es Salaam, have wandered into a situation.
PC Mansur Batenga, broker, deal-maker and faciliator, was innocently arranging for a potentially risky smuggling operation over to Tanganyika, where we would be working with well-funded NGO professionals, carrying out a practical plan where no one seemed the least likely to be shot and the bioroid we were helping was set to make it to Kenya and address influential politicians, business leaders and memetic policy makers at a meeting hosted jointly by East African governments, international NGOs and stakeholder industry corporations. Unfortunately, while Batenga makes arrangements, his friend, business partner and, at least in the technical sense, boss, Johann Copley, was approached by a sketchy young man (of Natenga's acquintance) and offered some sort of deal on stolen car windows, which he seemed to think a good mechanic should be able to 'liberate' in bulk. Copley doesn't steal (rescuing bioroids from slavery doesn't count, as people are not possessions), so he merely made polite excuses and sent the young enterpreuner on his way. He went to find Batenga and give him a report about some disquieting things he learned. Seems the legit-looking NGO guy who hired us was being followed by someone probably connected with our hated rivals when it comes to bioroid-running, the Nyekundu Nyoka ('Red Snakes') gang of violent, snakehead slavers biopunkers. So far, so frakked. And then our employer entered a distinctly shady club, the kind neurostable non-Snakes only go near when they've got either one of two deeply scary things burning a hole in their inboxes; a no-knock warrant to be served by a platoon of hunter-killer cybershells loaded with sciffy swarmies or a promise of safe conduct by someone on the Naga Council. And he didn't strike us as a military type. Bugger, bile and biocontainment-breach! Things got worse, though. When Batenga paid a call on his talented, if ethically-challenged, genehacker friend, Torgnyr Bergdahl*, he found to his dismay that Bergdahl was busily cutting up two lovely ladies of intelligent-design origin. Seems he agreed to put low-profile flesh pockets in their abdomen. For three tattooed thugs with red bandannas, that were clearly the handlers of these fine young ladies and what they are doing is no fine. Snakehead sex-slavers, Red Snakes!, Bergdahl, the kind who give other exploiters of the innocent a bad name! Learning that the Red Snakes will be back in a couple of hours to pick up the two victims already and bringing two more victims with them, Batenga started to scheme, message, call and coordinate. He came up with several plans, discarded parts from each and refined his game plan from suicidal failure down to simply risky and stupid. Sending sex slaves back to the perpetrators was not an option and anything they did couldn't implicate Bergdahl, or he'd become another one of their flayed showpiece victims, somehow living for hours after removal of the skin. Since no sensible plans are acceptable, risky and stupid it is. This left Batenga maybe an hour to search the less reputable hangouts of the Dar 'Free Net', as well as make any face-to-face pickups necessary, in order to get what they'd need to rescue the four victims. Good thing he's a street-level fixer wired into every tic of the dark data haven digital kingdoms. He's already gotten fast-acting aerosol anasthesia that works a lot better on baseline humans than many people of intelligent design, including the Houri-class. Now he needs three intimidating guns that can be concealed while moving in the street before and after the raid. He's got $1,000 meant to finance their other job and would like not to spend it all. Suggestions for weapons
Forumites, please comment and suggest at will. *Legally obliged to tell you that he is not a doctor, medical or otherwise. No licence, MD, no PhD and technically, not even a Master's degree. No, he will not be able to eventually earn such degrees or licenses in any jurisdiction possessing some mutuality with the EU and GRA, due to conditions of his parole. Really should not be allowed near biofabs, but the liberal attitude in Dar es Salaam toward generous gifts to politicians or bureucrats has made it impossible to enforce there.
