OK as mentioned by others you are conflating effective and maximum range.
So that I can be more consistent, how does GURPS define the two terms. I am certain that the quoted 660 yards for an arquebus is not "effective range" and another poster advised that GURPS used the maximum range. I correspondingly used 450 yards as the maximum range of the heavy crossbow (and 330 yards for the one in your cited example). As to the rest to be frank I've already talked about this at great length so I going to sum us thus: You seem to ignore the fact that yes while plate was better at stopping bolts. By weight, enough or anything will stop bolts of course. Actually other armour was effective as well, especially when you move away from optimal situations like firing a lancet head at some rather wide mail links at a stationary target at 10 yards. I am not sure what your first sentence here means. As for the rest, I wasn't asserting that ALL crossbows were effective against ALL mail. YOU chose the example cited. It shows that some crossbows with some bolts could be effective aginst some mail. Yes nobles tended to be better armoured then anyone else, but that did not mean no one else wore armour that was effective as per above. But equally you must concede that if crossbows were wholly ineffective against everyone then they would not have formed part of the force mix (and an expensive part in their twighlight years). |
