Adventure Time - Gate Guardian

The Gate Guardian from the Adventure Time set says that if you died, you can choose to not fight him and gain a level instead. I have 2 questions about a player that has a helper that has died.

1. Since the helper meets the requirement, can they choose to not fight it and gain the level?

2. Can the helper choose to not fight it and gain the level by himself?
