Unequipped items

Hello everyone!
I would like to ask if items in play that are turned sideways (unequipped) still occupy hand/head etc. slots. For example, I have a big item in play that requires two hands and I draw (after winning a battle) a small item that says it occupies 1 hand. Can I have it in play turned sideways or are my hands considered full?
