Card Questions: Pathfinder Faction and Divine Intervention

Playing with the original Munchkin Deluxe and Pathfinder

We were playing tonight and everyone was on Level Nine. One player was a Cleric and another was a Pathfinder. When the Pathfinder picked up the two cards one was Divine Intervention. This is where the table split.

Divine Intervention states that when you get this card Clerics IMMEDIATELY go up a level. However, with the Pathfinder you look at two cards - discarding and putting the other face down back in the deck. Therefore if you are never Getting the card and it is being discarded.

Does the Pathfinder unlock the Clerics ability, or does it get discarded?
