They can be used with little trouble. I have a list in my head of he changes that would have to be made and it's not a long list.

The most common class of changed items are the ones that worked with skills and that's because of a few changes in particular Skills. If you can figure out that "Fencing" from 3e becomes "Rapier" in 4e you should be fine.
