I can't run the file.

It tries to open something (I see a box appearing for a very, very short time).

I have Java 8 build 60 installed.

Hmmm... not good. Hopefully you can get some more information to help debug by running it in a terminal/command prompt.

In a terminal that is in the directory that you downloaded the file, you should be able to run the following command and see what error is produced:

java -jar GURPSInitTool.jar

If you aren't familiar with opening a terminal window, then you may need to query google for help on how to do that for your particular OS/version, or, if you are running windows 7 you can use this method: hold shift and right click on the folder that you want to open (the folder that holds the GURPSInitTool.jar file) and select 'Open Command Window Here'. This should bring up a command window already in the correct directory so that you can enter the above command.

I tried it out on my PC (Also Win 10 but with older versions of Java also installed) and it works.

On my laptop I only have the latest version of Java installed. Maybe that's the problem.

When I update Java on my PC, the installer normally wants to delete all older versions which prevented some programs to run. I Always had to check that the older version stay installed. On my laptop, I didn'have Java installed and installed only the latest version.

Glad you can at least try the program out on your PC to see what you think :).

I tried installing the latest java on my computer (win7) while uninstalling the older versions and the program runs ok, though that is not the same as a clean install.

If you want to get it working on your laptop please try running from the command prompt, which will provide some useful error information for me to analyze.

Wow. That's looks really useful.

My group plays on Maptools and I am able to enter all the caracters in the initiative list there. It's a great program & very useful.

Those messages are expected: the file not found line indicates that there is no properties file saved from a previous session (this stores window position/state/etc) which would be expected if it's a first run or the program doesn't have write permission in the current directory.

I have uploaded a new version (1.2.1) which cleans up the FileNotFoundException, but it should be functionally identical. It's at the same place: GURPSInitTool.jar.

If the program runs from the command line, then it seems that the problem likely lies in the configuration of how your system deals with executable jar files, which I am unfortunately not equipped to debug. The best I can suggest is this page [answers.microsoft.com], which has a couple of suggested solutions for getting executable jars to work.

I'm a fan of Maptools as well, though lately I've been trying out a fork of that tool called 'Mote' which has a few improvements... along with some new bugs and idiosyncrasies (http://idle-ideas.weebly.com/).
