discarding after killing a monster

I am not sure which rules you are referring to, but the ones in the standard fantasy Munchkin say:

discard the monster(s) and any other cards played

It is referring to the one-shot items or monster enhancer cards played into the combat. You would keep any permanent items you have equipped and your class and race cards.
