One crucial difference, which is made explicit in Hero System, is whether your enemies, in a tactical situation, can know or can guess that taking the item in question away from you will weaken you.

The answer for eyeglasses is obviously yes (which is why one of the characters in one of my fictional worlds continued to wear non-functioning eyeglasses after he had his eyes fixed - he was relying on, sooner or later, ending up in a combat or pseudo-combat situation, with an enemy taking away or destroying his glasses and then going "hah, now this dude can't see, now he's helpless"... Although there was also a definite interest in looking a certain way, to his decision).
