To me, although he says he's holding off an attacker, the actions bear no relationship with the mechanic set out on MA106.
To me, he's putting up a metaphorical 'wall of parries'. AoD is a maneuver you choose on your turn. The reason you don't see the resulting active defenses is because he is not attacked.
