To me, although he says he's holding off an attacker, the actions bear no relationship with the mechanic set out on MA106.

To me, he's putting up a metaphorical 'wall of parries'. AoD is a maneuver you choose on your turn. The reason you don't see the resulting active defenses is because he is not attacked.

Just thinking it through some more, and given his "probably a trap" comment, I think I'd call it a "different-looking" Feint—if the purpose is to keep the opponent from attacking, a Defensive Feint (MA101)
