Turn Progression Question

It was my turn, and I wished to sell some items to go up a level, and play some other cards. Then I wanted to kick down a door. Another player disputed what I was doing, claiming that you have to start your turn by kicking down a door. The group decided that I could play cards and such before I kicked down a door, but I was wondering what the official rule was. Does kicking down a door have to be the very first thing you do?
