What's wrong with the game of Mafia?
The game contains within itself a confusing contradiction… On one hand, a player is encouraged to approach the game with enthusiasm, competitive spirit and authentic will to ensure victory for his team. On the other hand, a player should not be too competitive, because there are always so many ways how he can easily cheat and thus acquire a non-compensable advantage. So, basically, while playing you should be a “good sport” and play with the goal of making the game as much fun for everybody. Also, playing conventionally presumes that a large group of people must remain in the same room for a long period of time. Moderator must be very experienced not to ruin the game by disclosing sensitive information. These things are the reasons why the game seems to have stayed marginalized as mere children’s make-believe. There are some online sites which attempted improve some elements of the gameplay. But they still have most all of the mentioned problems. For example, all online sites where Mafia can be played also have an entire page with rules about what is allowed and what is not allowed during the game. “You shouldn’t use external messaging apps, shouldn’t disclose your communication with moderator, shouldn’t take screenshots and share them with other players…” Recently, I created a promising online Mafia game that I designed specifically to eliminate the necessity for all these rules. The goal was to make a game where everything is allowed and nothing gets broken because of it. The result is effectively a platform for studies in psychology, sociology and game theory. And above all, a truly exciting game. This version of the game can be played quite differently than the convetional one. The recommended way of playing is in real-time. That is, as the days and nights pass in real life, so do they within the game. The people you meet every day at work, in the classroom, in the neighbourhood are in the game with you… and they are dying, every morning, one by one… you meet with them every day, just like you normally would. Only now, there is one additional news every morning and every evening. The link to the game is: http://exposemafia.com P.S. This is my personal project. If you are interested in what this game is in more detail (or what it could be), please contact me on my email address listed in the bottom of the game site.
