Helping In Combat

Imagine this scenario:

My friend Allan is at level 8. My other friend Simon and I are both scrubs at level 3. We make a tempoary alliance in order to catch up to Allan. Simon kicks down the door and meets The Potted Plant which he can obviously beat. But I am an Elf, and so Simon would like my unneeded help so that I can level up. Is this allowed? Simon does not in fact NEED my help.
