The girl does not appear to be part of the group that is feeding him. The soup would be bland if he wasn't so hungry.

It takes a bit of effort to corner the man who questioned him and get him in private, but Gabriel eventually gets him alone and communicates that dragons were involved. The man understands the concept immediately, but it seems to put him in a state of deep thought. In the process, Gabriel learns a few words, including the word for 'dragon'.
