It's not remarkable that you are hired for a job with similar activities to the one you did before. It's also not remarkable that some kinds of old work endured serving needs that have endured. There are however orders of magnitude more needs now than in 1987 that can be served with computer technology because the decreasing price points for computer power make it feasible to use a computer for ever smaller, more diverse use cases.
In the aggregate, this creates a demand for tools and solutions more suited to the particular need than those created for mass-appeal tasks and large enterprise activities. Parlez vous XAMP? Sprechen CSS, HTML, Javascript? Hablas Ruby o PHP o Perl?
