How many cards in hand

Hi. I just got into Munchkin and having a blast. Some friends got me hooked. I got the Booty edition. Anywho, my question is How many cards can you have in your hand at one time? When I started playing with my friends they said you can only have up to 5 cards yet nowhere in the rules do I see that ruling. Can you help? Also, they claimed that if you have more than 5 cards you must discard them to the lowest level player unless everyone is the same in that case you just discard normally.

Can you help clarify this for me? Thanks.
