And as others have pointed out: when there’s a discrepency between mass and volume in Spaceships, it’s almost always the volume that gets tweaked.
It works fairly well because there’s a lot of slop in the figures. Let’s say that you had a really expansive component for its weight, like a cargo bay. Figure that one cargo bay takes up five times as much volume as a typical spaceship component; you’d need ten of your spaceship’s components to be cargo bays before you’d qualify as one SM larger for targeting purposes; and even if [i]all/i] of them were open-space components, you wouldn’t reach Targeting SM +2.
If using the optional Armor and Volume rules from Alternate GURPS, it wouldn’t be too much of a stretch to say that a component that consists primarily of open space negates one Armor component for the purpose of surface area and Targeting SM modifiers. You might also want to extend the table into negative numbers for spacecraft with appreciably more “open-space” components than Armor components. Or you might want to just ignore the whole thing as too much work for too little gain.
