He doesn't have to figure out that it's cheaper to buy by the barrel. He just has to figure out that those tiny cups he gets at the bar don't hold enough and he'd like something he doesn't finish in a single swallow.

As an amateur mixologist living in the real world, where economics (mostly) make sense, I've bought enough bar stock to feel comfortable claiming that "$2d a drink" is more than realistic enough for a genre where economics go out the window and prices are essentially made-up. In any setting where alcoholic beverages are sold for currency to anybody who can afford them – as opposed to bartered for or restricted by sumptuary laws – it should be possible to get drunk on pocket change or to go broke trying to buy one sip of the good stuff, at the buyer's discretion. Your ogre can get drunk just fine on the Colt 45 of his world, while your fussy elf wizard might have to mortgage his power item to afford the equivalent of a Pétrus or Le Pin. If you're seeking a reason why some people would not drink the first or would seek out the second, the real world again provides: Being seen to drink the first is good for a reaction penalty with respectable onlookers, while sipping on the second gives a bonus.

Lets face it, we are all also aware that the price of a given drink can vary depending on where you drink it - but unless this is an important part of the game, you're probably just as well adding it to CoL.

It was several play sessions before buying in bulk was asked about. He was buying drinks individually, but with a HT of 15, a ST of 20, it got to be obvious that not buying by the barrel wouldn't work. Then, the weight of a 30 gallon cask of beer seemed too cumbersome, hence the interest in liquor by the barrel.
DF8:13 is just what I was looking for. I know I could hand wave this sort of thing, but I had wondered if there was some guidance published. I figured that guessing high was a good idea (no Merchant, SS: Monsterous, etc.). Thank you, guys! |

With those stats, ftr, he is throwing back about 10 drinks (1.25 gallons~5 liters of beer) per hour to get a 50% chance of catching a buzz. He has an extra drink with meals, now, but it is a lot of beer to drink, even for a SM+1 dude, and gets him reaction modifiers for anyone keeping track (like the bartender). Bonuses for seedy places that don't mind a sot and like cash, maluses for cozy inns and pubs. An average person would drink a quarter of that for a 50% chance at getting drunk.
edit: one thing I do handwave is lavatory trips |

I'm 'only' 270-280 lbs. or so, but that's essentially my position vis a vis regular beer. While I can reach a buzz with it, it is physically uncomfortable to drink enough beer to reach higher levels of intoxication.

Surely there's a cant handle liquor disadvantage somewhere, might as well net points while fixing the problem.
found it: susceptible (alcohol, occasional) -1 point per -1 to ht roll Last edited by spacemonkey; 01-08-2014 at 02:08 PM. |
