Hardened drinkers who are big enough might simply not get drunk from lower-alcohol drinks, as they can't consume enough alcohol from them to get drunk before their stomach is full. Thus the need for spirits.
I'm 'only' 270-280 lbs. or so, but that's essentially my position vis a vis regular beer. While I can reach a buzz with it, it is physically uncomfortable to drink enough beer to reach higher levels of intoxication.
