But gadgeteering (electronics) basically covers that, so that's all you need.
Oh no, no no no no, I was just talking about the gameplay mechanic behind it: which is, "even if it's item-related, it will only work for you". Basically, the idea is: "a dead battery becomes a zombie battery in my hands, and my hands only", so people won't run around with electronical gadgets everywhere because of me.
But well, if gadgeteer (electronics only) is a thing, I might as well take it. Should I also take Electrician to rewire/revive dead batteries?

So... Two Latin named, underage Gadgeteers...

It is a heck of a coincidence.

Wai-what? So our characters are basically clones when it comes to theme. I didn't foresee that. Would you like me to alter my character so he becomes something else, thematically speaking? I could be a german 35 years old, and switch Stealth and Bicycling for, say, butcher-related stuff. Would make me able to handle a knife, while still being a gadgeteer at my core. I'd lose the "kid in an ended world" trope though.

This is kind of putting us in an unfortunate position... I don't want to be the jerk who told you you couldn't do what you want... They do have their distinctions as well....

Solution: you're cousins who had no idea the other was around.

This would work like a greasy gear, as far as I'm concerned.

In what way does that solve the issue of character originality and niche protection?

If you want to allow both characters, that's fine, but I would rather not be family.

I... can't tell if this idiom is positive or negative. Like, gears are generally lubricated, at least on their axles, I think? But also they require traction to work, and "greasy" is not, in my experience, a word with positive connotations. But a large part of gears' effectiveness is because their teeth allow them to work largely through normal force instead of friction so being lubricated on the teeth wouldn't necessarily be bad. But....

I just haven't encountered it before, I guess, and am having a hard time decoding it. Probably because of my experience with negative connotations of "greasy".

Well, it's fairly obvious that neither one of you stole from the other, so both characters will work fine.

I think that matrix, at least (correct me if I'm wrong), is worried less about plagiarism than about in-game interaction. If two characters are functionally identical, or near-identical, it can make it hard for both players to engage in the game and contribute effectively. I've played a character that had very similar skills to another and while personality and roleplay can make some distinction, it can be aggravating that all the things with a chance of failure could just as well be handled by someone else.

But not everyone would feel the same way about that, which is why I stated that the important part was that everyone involved have fun with the characters played.
