Selling, but not taking the level

If one is only one level before the final level for the game, one has to kill a monster specifically, and cannot gain that final level by selling up or playing "GUAL" cards. Is it permissible though, to sell up according to the rules but gain nothing, just in order to get rid of unwanted remaining items?
