Especially since it can be used to dodge non-fatal attacks, and burning Extra Life to dodge something that would not have killed you just sucks.

Duplication with constructs for the ones that can attack, Illusion with a lot of modifiers for the basic clones.

That's not substitution-jutsu. That's Shadow (or water or sand or whatever) cloning.

With sub-jutsu just when you think yo0u've got a powerhouse ninja in position for a killer move like Rock Lee trying to screw Gaara's head into the arena floor with a Primary Lotus it turns out he's slipped free (undetectably) and left an inanimate duplicate in his place.

The Hidden Leaf version leaves the enemy grasping an enormous chunk of firewood but other substances are seen from other villages.

On a meta level most uSes do look like expending an Extra Life but Sakura used it 2 or 3 times in a row in the forest of death section of the Chunin exam.

Not quite a duplicate. Substitution Jutsu switches places with something nearby, which is usually depicted as a log in the anime, so the animators only had to draw it once.

I suppose this qualifies the Jutsu for the Environmental limitation, since it was mentioned at least once that a character was running low on things to use it with.

Ritual Path? Like the one Hidan used to perform after tasting his opponent's blood to turn himself into a voodoo-like doll, completely black with white skeleton-like marks.
