A Thief can attempt to steal as many times as they want, so long as they can discard to pay for the ability. (And just to be clear, even if they are successful, they can still do it again. And they can backstab mulitple times during the game, but can only backstab each participant in a combat once in that combat.

So they can backstab the same participant again in a later combat, right?
