Kneepads of allure question.

Can one utilize the kneepads to force others to accept your own help in combat? Like if you are an elf with the kneepads and with the lowest level and another player kicks down a door and finds a monster can you say "I'm going to help you beat that monster" and get an assist level? And keep level grinding this way during other players turn?
