Changing class or race, do you discard current or put in hand

When you want to change class or race, does your current card in play go on the discard pile, or can you pick it up and keep it in your hand?

You never put cards back into your hand once played, unless a card explicitly says otherwise. Discard the old Class or Race and play the new one.
