As I understood it the problem was that sooner or later they get all of the humanity ground out of them - all of their positive support structures are removed, their social structure reinforces ruthless behaviour, their existence requires exploiting other people and, sooner or later, they've seen enough generations go by that humans start to look like mayflies.

Most of White Wolf's "Transhumans" tended toward something like this, especially the more powerful ones.
