Monsters that won't fight

On a logical discussion in my last game, we decided that if the monster says they won't fight, (example: salesman on a thief, amazon on a woman).
Can they still be slayed? They just aren't fighting back.
As well, can you ask for help to use a player's condition to cause the fight to stop? (Example: Ask for help on a salesman from a thief)
