I just received Apocalypse today and already have a question concerning the seals. Since nothing happened after I kicked down a door, I decided to loot the room. The card I picked was "Disaster! Giant Meteor: Open A Seal AND Lose An Item" My question is, if I pick such a card (which in the end is is a curse card) during the room looting phase, do I keep it in my hand like usual, or do I have to play it instantly because it applies to a seal?
If I can keep it, I don't really see the point. What possible strategic use could there be in doing so? Could you please clarify. Thanks. |

Since you looted the room, the card would go into your hand. The upshot to that is you do not have to lose an Item. That would also answer your question about the strategic reason for keeping that specific card: you get to play it on someone else and not lose an Item. If you don't want to keep the card in your hand, then, by all means, play it on someone (even yourself), since Disasters can be played at any time, and just after having looted a room would qualify as "any time."

I think, in a game where there is an alternate win condition that kicks in if the Seventh Seal is opened, that one possible strategic use of such a card is fairly clear. If you are currently the one with the highest bonuses, being able to deliberately open the Seventh Seal is a useful ability to have... ;-)

Additionally, if the current Seal is particularly harsh for you, and you aren't too close to the Seventh, you might risk opening another Seal in the hope that it will be more forgiving.

Thanks for the quick answer. I somehow was under the impression that the "Loose An Item" applied to all players (go figure). That clears things up. And I do see the advantage of keeping it to open the seventh seal if it means I have the most toys, but it's kind of a drag to keep that card throughout the whole game (I picked it on my first turn), and could end up being played against me if it gets stolen (there's a fair amount of "steal card" cards).
