Or it could be seen as a sort of sacrament on the nun's part, letting her experience some fraction of what the Blessed Mother experienced...

Of course, that would entail examinations to ensure that the nun in question is indeed virginal from birth - those who took their vows after losing their virginity would not be eligible for this practice. And equally obviously, unless there's a form of healing magic that will regenerate the hymen, this particular sacrament would be one to a customer.
